New Medical School to Open in Ohio
Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio is planning to open the nation's first Jesuit College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2027, the organization announced on May 8, 2023.
The private university's board of trustees unanimously approved plans for the medical school May 5, 2023. The university is planning to build a new complex on its main campus to house the college.
The university plans to welcome its inaugural class of 75 students in 2027, with the goal of eventually growing class sizes to 150.
“Today's announcement comes at a pivotal time, as our university faces a rapidly changing landscape in higher education and our communities throughout the state and multistate region stare down a serious need for additional primary care physicians,” said Colleen Hanycz, PhD, president of Xavier University. “Establishing a medical college puts us on the forefront of addressing this need, particularly in underserved communities throughout our region.”
Once opened, the osteopathic medical school will be only the second in Ohio and 40th in the US.

ABMS Boards Offer Formative Assessments
Within 5 years of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission (Vision Commission) sharing its recommendations, all 24 American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Member Boards have implemented formative assessments for continuing certification.
The Vision Commission's report, which was released in February 2019, called for the Member Boards to create formative processes that offer opportunities for learning and improvement, and an alternative to the secure, point-in-time examinations of knowledge. The formative assessments offered by the boards are designed to support physicians in keeping their skills sharp and knowledge current while identifying knowledge gaps for improvement. At the same time, board certification by an ABMS Member Board is a credential on which the public can rely as a marker of professionalism and commitment to lifelong learning.
Seventeen of the Member Boards have implemented longitudinal assessments that offer:
Shorter assessments of specific content related to a physician's or medical specialist's needs and interests.
Recurring assessments over a period of time to reinforce concepts and promote learning and retention.
Ongoing performance feedback to identify areas in which additional learning is desirable.
Follow-up assessments to gauge a physician's or medical specialist's proficiency.
